He lived during a time of great discovery. He was born around 1470 in the town of Wolfenweiler. His father worked as a butcher. Later, the family moved to a place called Freiburg. Martin studied at the University of Freiburg starting in 1490. He learned from many important teachers there. He also lived in Basel to work with printers. This helped him learn how to engrave and print maps.

Martin worked with a group of scholars in Saint Dié. This group was called the Gymnasium Vosagense. They were led by a man named Walter Lud. Martin became close friends with a scholar named Matthias Ringmann.

They wanted to make a new book about geography. In 1506, they read letters about the travels of Amerigo Vespucci. These letters described lands in the western Atlantic. The scholars believed these lands were a new part of the world. They decided to make a special map to show this discovery.

In 1507, Martin and Matthias published a very important world map.

This map was the first to use the name "America." They chose this name to honor the explorer Amerigo Vespucci. Ringmann thought the name should sound like the names of Europe and Asia. The map also showed something very new. It showed the Americas as a separate landmass. It showed a big ocean called the Pacific between them and Asia. Martin also made a small printed globe to go with it.

Martin's work changed how people saw the world.

His 1507 map was very popular in Europe. Many universities used his maps to teach students. In 1511, he made the first printed wall map of Europe. This map showed important paths for traders and travelers. He also wrote about how to use tools for measuring land. One of his tools was a device called a polimetrum. In 1513, his maps were included in a book that became the first modern atlas.

We still remember Martin Waldseemüller today. Even though he died in 1520, his maps were used for many years. One special copy of his 1507 map was found in Germany in 1901. The United States Library of Congress bought it in 2003. It cost ten million dollars, which was a very high price.
