New Providence is the most populous island in the nation of The Bahamas. It serves as the primary commercial hub for the entire country. Nearly three quarters of the total population of The Bahamas lives on this single island.

The island contains the national capital city, Nassau, located on its eastern side. The map shows how the island sits within the archipelago. Nassau is a very large urban center. According to the 2022 census, it had a population of 292,522 people. This is an increase from the 246,329 people recorded in the 2010 census.

As a central hub, New Providence manages many important national functions. It is the headquarters for the three branches of the Bahamian Government. These branches are the executive, the legislative, and the judiciary. The island also hosts a massive financial sector. There are more than 400 banks and trust companies located here. Tourism is another vital part of the island's economy. The island's hotels and port handle more than two-thirds of the four million-plus tourists who visit The Bahamas annually. Interestingly, New Providence is the only part of The Bahamas that lacks a local government. Instead, the national government manages local affairs through 24 supervisory districts.

The history of the island involves many different names and people. The indigenous Lucayan people originally called the island Nema, which means "middle-water." The name New Providence comes from a 16th-century governor. He named it to thank Divine Providence for his survival after a shipwreck. The word "New" was added later to distinguish it from Providencia in the Western Caribbean. This distinction was necessary because pirates used the name Providencia. The first lasting European settlement on the island occurred in 1666. Before that, the Spanish had control but showed little interest in developing the land.

The settlement of Nassau has a turbulent past. It was originally known as Charles-town. However, the Spanish burned Charles-town to the ground in 1684. In 1695, Nicholas Trott rebuilt the town and renamed it Nassau. He named it in honor of the Prince of Orange-Nassau, who became William III of England. The island also faced many military conflicts. During the American Revolutionary War, the island was captured by foreign forces three times. One notable event was the Battle of Nassau on March 3 and 4, 1776.

An American squadron led by Esek Hopkins conducted the first-ever amphibious assault by American military forces here. They overwhelmed Fort Montague and forced the British to surrender.

For a period, New Providence became a famous base for pirates. This happened because the island lacked sufficient cannons and soldiers to defend its forts. By 1713, more than 1,000 pirates lived in Nassau. This number actually outnumbered the 400 to 500 law-abiding inhabitants. One pirate, Thomas Barrow, even declared himself the "Governor of New Providence." This era ended in 1718 when Governor Woodes Rogers arrived. He was sent by King George I of Great Britain. Rogers offered a pardon to any pirate willing to stop their illegal activities. He used intelligence and the threat of execution to successfully rid Nassau of pirates.

Economic shifts have shaped the island over the centuries. After the American Revolution, Loyalists tried to start plantations on the island. They failed because the soil was shallow and rainfall was sparse. This caused the archipelago to become nearly vacant by the early 19th century. However, New Providence remained prosperous due to a large British military presence. The island saw two major periods of economic success later on. During the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865, it was a popular port for blockade-runners. Later, during Prohibition, it became a center for smuggling distilled spirits.

Today, New Providence is a major global tourist destination. In the late 19th century, it was called the "sanitarium of the western hemisphere." This was due to its extremely mild climate and minimal daily temperature fluctuations. The island has many different settlements beyond Nassau. These include places like Paradise Island, Cable Beach, and Coral Harbour. The island's economy is now driven by its deep harbor and modern facilities. Large cruise ships visit the island frequently. The combination of history, business, and climate makes New Providence a central part of the Bahamas.
