One pirate, Thomas Barrow, even declared himself the "Governor of New Providence." This era ended in 1718 when Governor Woodes Rogers arrived. He was sent by King George I of Great Britain. Rogers offered a pardon to any pirate willing to stop their illegal activities. He used intelligence and the threat of execution to successfully rid Nassau of pirates.

Economic shifts have shaped the island over the centuries. After the American Revolution, Loyalists tried to start plantations on the island. They failed because the soil was shallow and rainfall was sparse. This caused the archipelago to become nearly vacant by the early 19th century. However, New Providence remained prosperous due to a large British military presence. The island saw two major periods of economic success later on. During the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865, it was a popular port for blockade-runners. Later, during Prohibition, it became a center for smuggling distilled spirits.

Today, New Providence is a major global tourist destination. In the late 19th century, it was called the "sanitarium of the western hemisphere." This was due to its extremely mild climate and minimal daily temperature fluctuations. The island has many different settlements beyond Nassau. These include places like Paradise Island, Cable Beach, and Coral Harbour. The island's economy is now driven by its deep harbor and modern facilities. Large cruise ships visit the island frequently.
