In 1718, Captain Woodes Rogers arrived to restore British control. He reformed the administration and rebuilt the fort.

Growth in Nassau changed many times over the centuries. In the late eighteenth century, thousands of Loyalists arrived. They came to The Bahamas after the American War of Independence. Many Loyalists brought enslaved people with them. These newcomers eventually outnumbered the original inhabitants. Most of New Providence was uncultivated bush before this. Loyalists established plantations like Clifton and Tusculum. Later, the British abolished the international slave trade in 1807. The Royal Navy liberated Africans from slave ships.
