Andros is a massive archipelago located within The Bahamas.

While it is politically viewed as a single island, its land area is larger than all other 700 Bahamian islands combined. The geography is complex and not a single solid mass. It consists of hundreds of small islets and cays. These are connected by tidal swamplands and mangrove estuaries. The archipelago contains three major islands: North Andros, Mangrove Cay, and South Andros. These main islands are separated by bights, which are estuaries that split the land from east to west.

The marine environment surrounding Andros is globally significant. To the east, the island is bordered by the Tongue of the Ocean. The Andros Barrier Reef sits in these eastern waters. This reef is the sixth longest in the world. To the west, north, and south, the island is surrounded by the Great Bahama Bank. These are extensive, shallow areas known as flats. Andros is also famous for its blue holes.

The history of Andros began with the Lucayan people. They were a subgroup of the Taíno people. They called the island Habacoa, meaning "large upper outer land." Spanish explorers arrived in the region during the late 1400s. Amerigo Vespucci mapped parts of the eastern shore between 1499 and 1500. However, the Spanish exploitation of native labor led to a tragic period. By 1520, a Spanish expedition found only 11 people remaining in The Bahamas. The Lucayan population had been effectively eradicated. The islands then remained largely uninhabited for about 130 years.

Different groups shaped the island during the colonial era. Britain gained control of The Bahamas in 1783. During the late 1600s and 1700s, pirates and buccaneers frequently visited Andros. The privateer Henry Morgan is linked to the area. Places like Morgan's Cave and Morgan's Bluff bear his name. Later, Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution settled on the islands. They brought enslaved people with them. In the 1820s, Black Seminoles and escaped slaves from Florida arrived by canoe and sloop. They established the settlement of Red Bays on the west coast.

The island's economy has shifted through many distinct stages. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, sponge fishing was the largest industry. Greek immigrants arrived to work on the Great Bahama Bank. This era ended in 1938 when a Red Tide infestation wiped out the sponges. Later, the landscape changed due to the timber industry. Between 1950 and 1975, the Owens Lumber company deforested much of the North Andros pineyards. Because of poor planning for sustainable harvests, the island now has overcrowded forests of young trees.

Today, the population of Andros is approximately 8,000 people.

Most residents live in a thin strip near the Queen Elizabeth Highway. This highway runs along the eastern coast. The island's size is impressive when compared to other places. North Andros alone is the sixth largest island in the West Indies. If you include all three main islands, Andros is the fifth largest in the West Indies. It is comparable in total area to Rhode Island and Long Island, New York combined.

Andros remains a place of scientific and historical interest. In 1961, astronaut Alan Shepard reported seeing the island from space. The waters are used for deep-sea research. The U.S. operates a long-term lease for the AUTEC base on the island. In 1970, the explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau used his vessel, the RV Calypso, to explore the blue holes. Today, organizations like the Andros Conservancy and Trust work to preserve the islands.

Conservation efforts include the creation of National Parks and Marine Protected Areas. These protect the unique ecosystems that make Andros so special.
