The New Earth is a central concept in Christian eschatology. Eschatology is the study of the final things or the end of the world. This doctrine describes the final state of redeemed humanity. It is often called the "world to come" in the Nicene Creed. The idea appears in several parts of the Bible. These include the Book of Isaiah and the second letter of Peter. It is also a major theme in the Book of Revelation.

In the Book of Revelation, a person named John receives a vision. This vision describes a new heaven and a new earth. This state is one of total perfection. Some commentators say this is where cosmic time becomes eternity. The vision uses symbolic and visual language. It shows the glory and beauty of God's inheritance for His people. In this new state, the old order of things passes away. There is no more death, mourning, crying, or pain. God is described as wiping every tear from people's eyes.

Scholars study the Greek language to understand this concept better. There are two different Greek words for "new." One word is "neos," which means new in time. The other word is "kainos," which refers to a new quality. The word "kainos" suggests renovation rather than total replacement. This is similar to how the Apostle Paul used the term "new creation." He did not mean a completely different person. He meant a person who is the same but transformed in quality. Therefore, the New Earth may be a renovated or restored version of our current world.

This restoration might happen on this current earth. It could also involve a rebuilt new planet. Some believe the earth will be cleansed by intense heat. Others suggest a great fire will destroy the old to allow for restoration. This idea is supported by the writings of Peter. He spoke about these things during a public speech in the temple at Jerusalem. The goal is to move from a state of knowing to a state of being. The New Testament doctrine emphasizes this ontological value. This means the change affects the very nature of existence.

The Roman Catholic Church has specific official teachings on this subject. They link the New Earth to the concept of New Creation. They see these ideas as being signified in the act of Baptism. Baptismal grace is viewed as a foretaste of eternal life. This leads toward a deified life in the New Earth on Judgment Day. On that day, Heaven will unite with the entire Universe. This happens during the Second Coming of Christ. The Church teaches that the Universe is unconditionally predestined for deification.

This deification involves the whole Universe, including all angels and saints. This process is compared to how Jesus' humanity was deified through his resurrection. The deified Universe is sometimes called the "New Jerusalem" or "Heavenly Jerusalem." This name represents the definitive house and reign of God. However, the Church also teaches that the damned will be different. Those who reject God, along with Satan and demons, will be prisoners in hell. They reject the opportunity for eternal deified life in the New Earth.

Different thinkers have proposed various details about this future state. Saint Thomas Aquinas offered notable unofficial teachings. He argued that the New Earth would include both material and spiritual components. However, he also believed it would lack anything unnecessary. In his work *Summa Contra Gentiles*, he suggested certain things would not exist. He argued there would be no need for eating or defecation. He also suggested there might be no need for food, cooking, animals, or plants. These varying views show the depth of human wonder regarding the end of time.
