Naviglio di Bereguardo

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Naviglio di Bereguardo is a special water path in Lombardy, Italy.

It is a branch of a larger canal called the Naviglio Grande. This water path splits off at a place named Abbiategrasso. The canal travels south to a town called Bereguardo. It covers a distance of about 12 kilometers. This canal is part of a much bigger system of waterways. It helps connect the city of Milan to the Ticino river.

This system works like a long chain of water paths. The Naviglio di Bereguardo connects to the Ticino river. The Ticino river then flows into the Po river. The Po river eventually leads all the way to the sea. These canals were very important for the city of Milan. They helped the city stay strong in northern Italy. Boats used these paths to move many different things. The water also helped farmers water their crops. Later, the water helped make power for making goods.

Building this canal was a very big job. Construction began in the year 1420. Workers finished the whole project in 1470. A man named Bertola da Novate was the main engineer. He lived from 1410 to 1475. A leader named Francesco Sforza helped pay for the work. Da Novate was a very skilled builder. He designed many parts of this water system. His work helped make the canals work well.

Bertola da Novate built 18 locks for the canal. A lock is a tool to move boats up or down. He used a special kind of gate called a mitre gate. This gate was a major improvement to how locks worked. Da Novate first used this idea in 1458. Some old drawings show that Leonardo da Vinci drew similar gates. These gates helped boats travel through different water levels. The 18 locks made the canal very useful for boats.

Think about how we use roads to travel today. These canals were like water roads for people long ago. Instead of cars, people used boats to move items. Instead of gas, they used the flow of water. The canal helped with farming by moving water to plants. It also helped with making things by providing energy. This system shows how people can use water to help a whole region. It connects many places through one long path.
