Native element mineral

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Most minerals in the world are made of several different elements mixed together. However, some special minerals exist in an uncombined form. These are called native element minerals.

They occur in nature with a distinct mineral structure. This means their tiny building blocks are arranged in a specific, clear way. They do not need to be joined to other elements to form a mineral. This makes them very unique in the study of geology.

Native element minerals work by existing as pure substances. They can be metals, such as gold or copper.

They can also be alloys, which are mixtures of metals. Some are metalloids, which act like both metals and nonmetals. You can even find nonmetals in this group.

Some of these minerals are even very hard, like diamond. The way they form depends on their specific chemical makeup. This allows them to keep their own shape in nature.

Scientists use a special system to organize these minerals. It is called the Nickel–Strunz classification system. This system helps experts group minerals by their properties. It uses a code to label different families. For example, it uses numbers and letters to show a mineral's class. This makes it easier to study how different elements behave. It is a very important tool for anyone studying the Earth.

There are many different families within this classification. The 01.A group includes the Copper-cupalite family. This family has minerals like native copper, gold, and silver.

The 01.AF group contains platinum-group elements like platinum and iridium. Other groups include metallic carbides and silicides. The 01.CB family contains the carbon-silicon group. This includes things like graphite and diamond. There are even groups for sulfur and selenium.

You might recognize some of these minerals from your own life. Gold and silver are famous native elements used for jewelry.

Copper is often used in wires and tools. Even the graphite in your pencil is a native element mineral.

Most people do not realize that these common items are actually part of a special mineral class. They are all examples of things that stay pure in nature. This connects the science of minerals to the objects we see every day.
