The first part, NN, represents the mineral class number. The letters X and Y represent the mineral division and family. The final part, ##x, identifies the specific mineral or group. 
The classification includes many distinct families. One major group is 01.A, which contains metals and intermetallic alloys. Within this, the Copper-cupalite family includes native copper, gold, and silver. Another group is 01.AF, which contains platinum-group elements. These include platinum, iridium, and palladium. There is also the 01.AB Zinc-brass family, which contains alloys of copper and zinc. 
Other families represent different chemical combinations. The 01.B group contains metallic carbides, silicides, nitrides, and phosphides. For example, the 01.BC group contains nitrides like roaldite. The 01.BD group consists of phosphides such as schreibersite. There are also nonmetals found in the 01.C group. This group includes the Carbon-silicon family, which contains both graphite and diamond. 
Some native elements are very well known to the public. Gold and silver are often used for jewelry because they are found in this form. Copper is a common metal used in many technologies. Even the carbon in a diamond is a native element mineral. Diamond is part of the 01.CB carbon-silicon family. 
Studying native elements connects geology to several other scientific fields. It links chemistry, as these minerals are defined by their elemental makeup. It also connects to metallurgy, the study of how metals are used. Understanding how these minerals form helps us understand the history of the Earth.
