He began his reign on May 1, 2019. This moment started a new era called Reiwa. He became emperor after his father, Emperor Akihito, decided to step down. Today, his role is mostly ceremonial. The Japanese constitution says the emperor is a symbol of the state. He does not make political rules or laws. Instead, he represents the unity of the Japanese people through many special ceremonies.

As a young prince, Naruhito had many hobbies. He enjoyed climbing mountains and riding horses. He also played the violin for a time. Later, he switched to the viola. He felt the violin was a bit too loud for his taste. One day, he found an old road on the palace grounds. This discovery sparked a lifelong interest in history. He wanted to learn how people traveled in the past. This interest led him to study history at a high level.

Naruhito went to many different schools to learn.

He attended Gakushūin schools in Tokyo. In 1982, he graduated from Gakushuin University with a degree in history. He then traveled to the United Kingdom. He studied English at Merton College at Oxford University. While there, he even climbed the highest mountains in Scotland, Wales, and England. He also met many royal families from across Europe.

In 1993, Naruhito married a diplomat named Masako Owada.

Naruhito was formally named Crown Prince in 1991. This title meant he was next in line for the throne. His life as a prince involved many duties, but he also spent time abroad. In 1974, he even went on a homestay to Melbourne, Australia.

Now that he is emperor, Naruhito focuses on many important topics. He cares deeply about water policy and saving water. He has given speeches at large world forums about water. He also supports the World Organization of the Scout Movement.
