He ruled from January 7, 1989, until April 30, 2019. His time as ruler was called the Heisei era. This name was chosen to mean peace in the world. Akihito wanted to be a symbol of that peace. He worked to bring the imperial family closer to the people.

His life followed a very specific path. He was born on December 23, 1933, in Tokyo. He was the fifth child of Emperor Hirohito and Empress Kōjun. During the Second World War, he moved away from Tokyo to Nikkō. In 1952, he had a ceremony to become the crown prince. This meant he was the official heir to the throne.

He also traveled to London in 1953. There, he represented Japan at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. He finished his university studies in 1956.

In 1959, Akihito did something very special. He married Michiko Shōda, who was a commoner.

This was a big change for the imperial family. It was the first imperial wedding to be shown on television. About 15 million people watched it in Japan. They had three children named Naruhito, Fumihito, and Sayako. The couple traveled to thirty-seven different countries together.

As emperor, Akihito had many important duties. He was a ceremonial leader rather than a political one. This means he followed the rules of the Japanese Constitution. He visited all forty-seven prefectures in Japan. He also visited many remote islands.

He visited battle sites like Saipan to honor people who died. He even expressed remorse to other countries for past suffering. He also used his voice to help people after the 2011 earthquake.

Akihito eventually decided to step down from his role. He told the people in 2016 that he was getting older. His health was also declining. Because of this, the government passed a new law. This law allowed him to abdicate, or give up the throne.

His son, Naruhito, became the new emperor in 2019. Akihito is now called the Emperor Emeritus. He is the oldest living member of the Imperial House of Japan.
