He was born Yoshihito on August 31, 1879, at the Tōgū Palace in Tokyo. His father was Emperor Meiji, and his mother was Yanagiwara Naruko. Yoshihito became the heir to the throne in 1888 after his two older siblings died in infancy. His time as leader is very important to history. It is often called the Taishō democracy era. During this time, political power began to shift toward elected groups in the Imperial Diet.

Life was often difficult for Yoshihito because of his health. He suffered from meningitis shortly after he was born. This caused many neurological issues that lasted his whole life. He spent much of his youth at imperial villas by the sea in Hayama and Numazu. While he was good at horse riding, he found some school subjects hard. He studied many languages like French and Chinese with private tutors.

He even traveled to Korea in 1907 to study its language. This was the first time an heir to the throne had ever left Japan.

In 1900, Yoshihito married Sadako Kujō. She was chosen by his father for her intelligence and dignity. The couple had four sons: Hirohito, Yasuhito, Nobuhito, and Takahito.

As he grew older, his health made it harder to do his job. By 1919, he could no longer perform his official duties. Because of this, his eldest son, Hirohito, was named regent in 1921. A regent is a person who rules on behalf of a leader. This helped the country continue to run smoothly during his illness.

Many big events happened while he was Emperor. Japan joined the Allies during World War I. The country also faced the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918. In 1923, the Great Kantō Earthquake hit Japan.

Yoshihito was at a villa in Nikko when the earthquake happened. He learned about the damage through carrier pigeons. Even though he was not able to lead in person, these events shaped the nation. His reign saw Japan moving through very modern and changing times.

Emperor Taishō died on December 25, 1926, at the age of 47. He passed away from a heart attack at the Hayama Imperial Villa. His son, Hirohito, then became the next emperor.
