This diverse structure allows the university to support many different fields of study simultaneously.

The university operates through a complex system of academic divisions and physical campuses. The main campus is located in the western part of Singapore. It is the largest university campus in the entire country. NTU also manages a separate medical campus located in the Novena healthcare district. Students engage in various disciplines through specific institutions like the College of Computing and Data Science.

The university also features the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, which is an autonomous graduate institution. This organizational model ensures that specialized research and teaching can happen across many different sectors.

NTU's history is deeply connected to the changing needs of Singapore's economy. In the 1970s, Singapore faced a significant shortage of engineers during economic restructuring. To solve this, the government established the Nanyang Technological Institute, or NTI, in 1981. NTI was a tertiary institution affiliated with the National University of Singapore. It focused on engineering and applied science programs. These programs emphasized practical laboratory training and industrial attachments. NTI provided the academic and infrastructural foundation for what would eventually become a full university.

The transition to a full university occurred through formal parliamentary legislation. In March 1991, the Singapore Parliament approved the formation of NTU. The university was officially inaugurated on 1 July 1991. At this time, the National Institute of Education was incorporated into the university. This move supported national goals for research-intensive higher education in science and technology. In 1996, the alumni rolls of the former Nanyang University were transferred to NTU. This helped connect the new institution to its historical roots.

The student body is also diverse, with 31% of students, or 8,089 individuals, being foreign nationals. Among these international students, 58% are pursuing postgraduate degrees.

The campus itself is a site of significant architectural interest and heritage. Much of the layout comes from the NTI period between 1981 and 1982. The master plan was designed by the Japanese architect Kenzō Tange. He is a recipient of the 1987 Pritzker Architecture Prize. The North Spine, which serves as a central academic spine, opened in 1986.

Even the Nanyang Business School features modern developments, such as Gaia, a six-storey mass timber building. Gaia is the largest wooden building in Asia.

NTU also preserves the history of its predecessor, Nanyang University. Founded in 1955, Nanyang University was the first Chinese-language university in Southeast Asia. It was located south of the current NTU grounds near Yunnan Garden. Today, the former administration building is the Chinese Heritage Centre. This building is a designated national monument.
