It is located on the outskirts of Coventry, positioned between the West Midlands and Warwickshire. The institution serves as a center for high-level learning and scientific discovery. It is organized into three distinct faculties: Arts; Social Sciences; and Science, Engineering and Medicine. Within these three faculties, the university maintains thirty-two different departments. The institution is divided into various specialized schools that have grown over time. These include the Warwick Business School, established in 1967, and the Warwick Law School, founded in 1968. The Warwick Manufacturing Group, or WMG, began in 1980. Later, the Warwick Medical School was opened in 2000.

Warwick's history began with ideas discussed shortly after World War II. Local leaders from the city and county worked together to establish the site. There was a debate regarding whether to name the school after Coventry or Warwickshire. Eventually, the name "University of Warwick" was chosen as a compromise.

The university received its Royal Charter of Incorporation in 1965. This allowed it to admit its first 450 undergraduate students in October of that year. Over the decades, the university expanded its land by purchasing adjoining farmland. It also incorporated the Coventry College of Education in 1979 and Horticulture Research International in 2004.

The scale of the university is quite large in terms of people and finance. There are approximately 29,534 full-time students currently enrolled. The university also employs 2,691 academic and research staff members. Every year, the school receives about 38,071 applications for undergraduate places. Only about 4,950 undergraduates are chosen from that large group.

For the 2024–2025 period, the annual income was £859.9 million. Of this total, £147.5 million came specifically from research grants and contracts. The total expenditure for the institution was £828.7 million.

Warwick is known for its significant contributions to global knowledge and industry. Researchers there have participated in the development of penicillin and music therapy. They have also contributed to computing standards like ISO and ECMA. The university hosts the Advanced Propulsion Centre, which manages a £1 billion investment fund. This fund helps develop low-carbon technologies for the automotive industry.

Finally, Warwick is connected to many important global and regional networks. It is a member of the Russell Group and the European University Association. It is also the only European member of the Center for Urban Science and Progress. This is a collaboration with New York University involving technology companies. Locally, it helped form the M5 Group with five other Midlands universities. This group works to increase research income and allow for better collaboration between institutions.
