The history of the college began in the 19th century. Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, was a key figure. He wanted to create a cultural and scientific district in South Kensington. In 1845, the Royal College of Chemistry was founded with his support. This was the oldest institution that eventually helped form the university. In 1851, the Great Exhibition was organized by Henry Cole and Prince Albert. The money made from this exhibition helped develop the South Kensington area. This led to the opening of the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

As time passed, several different colleges merged to create the modern institution. In 1907, King Edward VII granted a Royal Charter. This established the Imperial College of Science and Technology. This new institution brought together the Royal College of Science and the Royal School of Mines. The City and Guilds College joined the group in 1910. Later, the university grew its medical expertise through many mergers. In 1988, it merged with St Mary's Hospital Medical School. This was followed by more mergers in 1997. These changes created the Imperial College School of Medicine.

For much of its history, Imperial was part of the University of London. Students had to take separate exams to get London degrees. In 1919, students and alumni voted to become an independent university. They wanted their own power to award degrees. This change happened slowly over many years. In 2003, the Privy Council finally granted the college its own degree-awarding powers. By July 2007, Imperial became a fully independent university. This independence allowed it to manage its own growth and academic direction.

Imperial continues to expand its facilities to meet new challenges. In 2016, the university began moving into the White City campus. This included the launch of the Innovation Hub. In 2016, the university also helped open the Francis Crick Institute. This is the largest single biomedical laboratory in Europe. Looking toward the future, the university has even more plans. In 2025, Imperial announced plans for a new AI campus at White City. This campus will feature a 12-storey building planned for 2028 and 2029.
