In 1893, it became a founding college of the federal University of Wales. It later merged with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology in 1988. This merger created the University of Wales College, Cardiff. By 2005, it became an independent university with the legal name Cardiff University.

The founding of the college was part of a larger Welsh university movement. This movement started at a meeting in London in 1854. Leaders like Hugh Owen wanted to establish colleges throughout Wales. In 1880, a committee led by the 1st Baron Aberdare investigated higher education needs. The resulting Aberdare Report recommended colleges for both North and South Wales.

Cardiff University maintains important connections to other systems and organizations. It works with the National Health Service in Wales to train new doctors. In 2005, it launched the North Wales Clinical School in Wrexham. This project received £12.5 million in funds from the Welsh Assembly. This collaboration helped treble the number of trainee doctors in Wales over four years.

In the early 1990s, the university's computer systems even served as the home for The Internet Movie Database.

Despite its successes, the university has faced modern challenges. In 2025, it announced an operating deficit of £31.2 million for the 2023–24 period. This led to plans to reduce the academic workforce by about 400 positions. These cuts represent roughly 7 percent of the total staff. Some academic programs, such as ancient history and music, were also scheduled for discontinuation. These changes highlight the complex financial realities facing large research institutions today.
