Many people have a personal name, or a given name. They often have a surname, which is a family name. In most of Europe, the given name comes first. In parts of Asia, the family name comes first. Some people have two family names from each parent. In some cultures, a child is named after a father or grandfather. In others, a name might show where a person was born.

Some names follow special rules. These are called naming conventions. For example, cars have a make and a model. In science, people use special rules to name new plants or stars. Even computers have names that follow a set pattern.

Names can be very powerful. In ancient times, people thought names held magic. In the Bible, changing a name showed a change in life. Even animals use names. Dolphins use special whistles to call specific friends.
