Proper noun

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Words can name many things or just one thing. We use common nouns for groups. A planet is a common noun. But Jupiter is a proper noun. Proper nouns name a single person, place, or thing. They help us know exactly who or what we mean. Examples include names like Sarah or Africa.

Proper names can be one word or many words. Some names use the word "the." We see this in names like the Netherlands or the Rolling Stones. Some names might sound like a description. A woman named Rose is a name, not a flower. A place called Newtown might not be new anymore.

In English, we often use big letters for these names. This is called capitalization. We use it for names like Canada or Monday. Some languages do things differently. For example, Spanish does not capitalize days of the week.

Sometimes, one name can mean many things. The name Jupiter can be a planet or a god. The name Toyota can be a car company or a town. This is why names are so important for clear talk.
