Myiasis

Myiasis is a condition where fly larvae, also known as maggots, live inside a live animal.

These larvae grow by feeding on the tissues of their host. While many flies only look for open wounds, some special flies can even lay eggs on unbroken skin. This can cause a big problem for farmers and their livestock around the world. It also happens to people living in warm, tropical areas. In these places, people may need medical help to surgically remove the parasites.

The way this happens depends on the type of fly involved. Some flies lay eggs directly into open sores. Other larvae might enter the body through the nose or the ears. It is even possible to swallow eggs if they are on food or lips. This can lead to an infection in the stomach or intestines. Sometimes, flies like the cheese fly can cause an accidental version called pseudomyiasis. This happens when larvae are eaten by mistake, which might cause an upset stomach.

We can learn how the cycle works by looking at sheep. First, a female fly lays eggs in damp areas near the sheep's tail. These eggs usually hatch in about eight hours to one day. Once they hatch, the larvae use their mouthparts to break the skin. They then tunnel into the tissue under the skin to feed. If this is not treated, a bacterial infection can spread through the blood. This can make the animal very weak and can even be fatal.

Many different kinds of flies are involved in myiasis. There are blowflies, which belong to the Calliphoridae family. There are also botflies from the Oestridae family and fleshflies from the Sarcophagidae family. Some flies, like the human botfly, are very specific to certain hosts. Other flies might only cause an infestation by accident. Scientists use different names to group these flies based on how they live. For example, some must have a host to grow, while others do not.

There are ways to stop these flies from causing harm. Farmers might use sprays to stop adult flies from reaching animals. They can also use the sterile insect technique. This involves releasing special male flies that cannot produce healthy eggs. For people, keeping things clean is a great way to stay safe. Washing clothes in hot water can kill any fly eggs. Even using a hot iron on clothes can help destroy the eggs.
