Myiasis is a way that fly larvae, also called maggots, live inside a live animal.

These maggots feed on the animal's body parts. This can happen to many animals like sheep and dogs. It can also happen to people in warm, tropical areas.

Some flies lay eggs in open wounds. Other flies can lay eggs on unbroken skin. Some eggs might even be swallowed if they are on food. This can lead to intestinal myiasis, which is an infection in the gut.

In sheep, the process follows a set of steps. First, female flies lay eggs in damp spots near the tail. The eggs hatch into larvae in about one day. Then, the larvae use their mouths to break the skin. They tunnel into the body to feed. This can lead to a bad infection in the blood.

People can prevent this by staying clean. Washing clothes in hot water can kill fly eggs. In some places, farmers use sprays to stop adult flies. They may also use a method called the sterile insect technique. This uses special male flies to stop new eggs from growing.
