The muskellunge is a very large fish from North America. People often call it a muskie, musky, ski, or lunge. It is the biggest member of the pike family.

This fish is a top predator in its water. This means it sits at the top of the food chain. Very few animals hunt a full-grown muskie. Only humans and large birds like bald eagles might pose a threat. This makes the muskie a very important part of its home.

Muskies are ambush predators that use a clever way to hunt. They have long bodies and flat heads. Their fins are set far back on their bodies. This shape helps them move quickly to surprise prey. They like to hide near weed edges or rocks.

When they find food, they bite swiftly. They swallow their prey head first. Their large stomachs let them eat things two-thirds their own length. They eat fish, frogs, ducks, and even mice.

People have studied these fish for a long time. The name muskellunge comes from the Ojibwe language. Some words meant "great fish" or "big pike." Others meant "bad pike" or "ugly pike."

Before the name we use today became common, there were 94 different names for them. One name was milliganong. Another was maskalonge. These names show how many different ways people have described this fish.

There are different types of muskellunge in different places. The Spotted Muskellunge is common near the Great Lakes. It has spots in rows on its body. The Barred Muskellunge lives in the Ohio River system. There is also a Clear Muskellunge found in places like Minnesota.

Some people make a hybrid called a tiger muskellunge. This is a mix of a muskie and a northern pike. Tiger muskies grow fast, but they do not live as long. They are also unable to have babies of their own.

Muskies live in many lakes and rivers across North America. You can find them from Michigan and Minnesota down to Tennessee. They also live in parts of Canada and the St. Lawrence River.

They like clear water to live in. In the summer, they move between shallow and deep water. They follow the temperature of the water to stay comfortable. Their feeding habits even change with the moon. They eat more during full and new moons because the moonlight helps them see. This is much like how humans see better with more light.
