Muntadhar al-Zaidi is a well-known broadcast journalist from Iraq.

He grew up in Sadr City, which is a suburb of Baghdad. For much of his career, he worked as a reporter for Al-Baghdadia TV. This station is based in Egypt but owned by Iraqis. Al-Zaidi often reported on people who were struggling or suffering. He was known for covering the effects of the war on regular people. His work earned him a lot of respect from many people in Iraq.

Life was often difficult and dangerous for al-Zaidi during his career. In November 2007, unknown men kidnapped him while he was going to work. They held him for three days and questioned him about his job. He was also arrested twice by the United States Armed Forces. In one instance in January 2008, soldiers searched his home. They later offered him an apology for that arrest. These events showed how hard it was to work as a reporter in Baghdad.

On December 14, 2008, al-Zaidi did something that became famous worldwide. He was at a press conference in Baghdad with U.S. President George W. Bush. During the meeting, al-Zaidi threw both of his shoes at the President. He shouted that this was a farewell kiss from the Iraqi people. He said the gesture was for widows, orphans, and those killed in Iraq. President Bush ducked twice to avoid being hit by the shoes.

After the incident, al-Zaidi faced a legal trial in Iraq. He was represented by Dheyaa al-Saadi, the head of the Iraqi Bar Association. On February 20, 2009, he had a 90-minute trial. A judge sentenced him to three years in prison for the act. This sentence was later reduced to just one year. Al-Zaidi was released on September 15, 2009, after serving nine months. He was released because of his good behavior in jail.

Al-Zaidi has tried to use his fame to help others in his country. He planned to start a foundation to build hospitals and orphanages. He wanted these places to offer free medical treatment to people. In 2018, he even tried to run for a seat in the Iraqi Council of Representatives. He wanted to fight against corruption in the government. Although his bid for office was not successful, he remains a significant figure. His actions inspired many other people to protest in different ways around the world.
