He grew up in a neighborhood called Badawiya in Kuwait City. Mohammed was a student who traveled to the United States for school. He studied at Chowan University in North Carolina. Later, he went to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering in 1986.

Mohammed was involved in several plans to cause harm. In 1994, he went to the Philippines to work with his nephew, Ramzi Yousef.

They worked on a plan called Operation Bojinka. This plan aimed to destroy 12 airplanes flying between different countries. One test of a bomb on a Philippine Airlines flight caused the death of a Japanese traveler.

This was the first time Mohammed helped plan a major operation. He also helped plan the 2002 Bali bombings and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

He eventually became a key member of a group called al-Qaeda. He worked closely with the group's leader, Osama bin Laden.

Mohammed joined al-Qaeda as a full member around 1999. He led the group's media and propaganda work for a few years. He was also known as the main planner for the September 11 attacks. He helped choose the targets for that day. The targets included the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the U.S. Capitol.

In March 2003, Mohammed was captured in the city of Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

This happened because of a joint effort by the U.S. CIA and Pakistan's ISI. After he was caught, he was moved to secret prison sites. Later, he was sent to the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in December 2006. He faces many serious charges there, including murder and war crimes. A military judge once set a date for his trial in 2021. However, many delays happened because of the COVID-19 pandemic and other legal talks.

Legal battles regarding his case have lasted for many years. In July 2024, Mohammed agreed to a plea deal. He would accept a life sentence to avoid a death penalty trial. However, the Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, canceled this deal two days later. In July 2025, a court also ruled that the deal was void. This means his legal situation is still being decided by the courts. His story shows how difficult it can be to handle justice for very serious crimes.
