His professional journey began with his family's move to India. He was born on 19 April 1957 in Aden, which was then a British crown colony. His father, Dhirubhai Ambani, founded Reliance Industries. The family lived in a modest two-bedroom apartment in Bhuleshwar, Mumbai, until the 1970s. During this time, the family used public transportation and did not receive allowances. Later, his father purchased a 14-floor apartment block called 'Sea Wind' in Colaba.

Ambani received a high level of education before entering the business world. He attended the Scindia School in Gwalior and Hill Grange High School in Mumbai. He later studied at St. Xavier's College and the Institute of Chemical Technology. There, he earned a BE degree in chemical engineering. He even enrolled in an MBA program at Stanford University. However, he withdrew in 1980 to help his father. His father believed real-life skills were best learned through experience rather than classrooms.

His career is defined by massive industrial projects and expansion. At age 24, he managed the construction of the Patalganga petrochemical plant. He later directed the creation of the world's largest grassroots petroleum refinery in Jamnagar, India. By 2010, this facility could produce 660,000 barrels of oil per day. This site is integrated with power generation, ports, and petrochemicals. He also founded Reliance Infocomm to focus on communication technology.
