Human biology can influence how attractive a person is to a mosquito. People who produce more carboxylic acids may be more attractive. Skin bacteria also play a role by metabolizing sweat and sebum into volatile organic compounds. Interestingly, certain infections can change how a person smells. People with malaria produce specific aldehydes in their skin. These chemicals, such as heptanal and nonanal, can actually make an individual more attractive to mosquitoes. This creates a complex connection between the host's health and the mosquito's behavior.
