The life of an Anopheles mosquito happens in four distinct stages. It begins when a female lays eggs directly on the water. These eggs are tiny and have special floats on their sides.

After the larvae grow, they become comma-shaped pupae. Finally, the adult mosquito emerges from the pupa to fly.

Scientists have studied these mosquitoes for a long time. A German scientist named J. W. Meigen first described them in 1818. He named the group Anopheles, which comes from a Greek word meaning "useless." Later, an English scientist named Frederick Vincent Theobald did a lot of work on them. In 1901, he described 39 different species in a large five-volume book. He used specimens sent to the British Museum from all over the world. This helped people understand how many different types of these mosquitoes exist.

The life cycle of an *Anopheles* mosquito follows four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The first three stages are aquatic and typically last between 5 and 14 days. This duration depends on the specific species and the ambient temperature. Female mosquitoes lay between 50 and 200 eggs during each oviposition. These eggs are quite small, measuring about 0.5 mm by 0.7 mm. They are unique because they possess floats on either side.

Once the eggs hatch, the larvae begin their underwater life. Unlike many other mosquito types, the *Anopheles* larva lacks a respiratory siphon. A siphon is a tube used to breathe at the surface. Because they lack this, the larvae must position their bodies horizontally to the water surface to breathe. They use spiracles, or breathing holes, located on their eighth abdominal segment. The larvae feed on algae, bacteria, and other microorganisms in the surface layer. They move through the water using jerky body movements or mouth brushes. After four stages, known as instars, they molt their exoskeletons and metamorphose into pupae.

The pupal stage is often called a tumbler. The pupa is comma-shaped when viewed from the side. The head and thorax are merged into a single structure called a cephalothorax. To breathe, the pupa uses a pair of respiratory trumpets on the cephalothorax. After a few days, the dorsal surface of the cephalothorax splits. This allows the adult mosquito to emerge from the pupa. The adult mosquito has three body sections: the head, thorax, and abdomen. The head contains the eyes, antennae, and a proboscis for feeding.

Adult *Anopheles* can be identified by several physical characteristics. Their maxillary palps are as long as their proboscis. They also have discrete blocks of black and white scales on their wings. A very distinct feature is their resting position. Both sexes rest with their abdomens pointing upward.

This differs from the horizontal stance of culicine mosquitoes. While females require blood meals to provide protein for egg development, males feed only on nectar. In fact, blood is toxic to males and can kill them within a few days.
