Because they lack this, the larvae must position their bodies horizontally to the water surface to breathe. They use spiracles, or breathing holes, located on their eighth abdominal segment. The larvae feed on algae, bacteria, and other microorganisms in the surface layer. They move through the water using jerky body movements or mouth brushes. After four stages, known as instars, they molt their exoskeletons and metamorphose into pupae.
The pupal stage is often called a tumbler. The pupa is comma-shaped when viewed from the side. The head and thorax are merged into a single structure called a cephalothorax. To breathe, the pupa uses a pair of respiratory trumpets on the cephalothorax. After a few days, the dorsal surface of the cephalothorax splits. This allows the adult mosquito to emerge from the pupa. The adult mosquito has three body sections: the head, thorax, and abdomen. The head contains the eyes, antennae, and a proboscis for feeding.
Adult *Anopheles* can be identified by several physical characteristics. Their maxillary palps are as long as their proboscis. They also have discrete blocks of black and white scales on their wings. A very distinct feature is their resting position. Both sexes rest with their abdomens pointing upward. 
The history of *Anopheles* research began with the German entomologist J. W. Meigen. In 1818, he first described the genus and two species. He noted that the name *Anopheles* comes from a Greek word meaning "useless." Taxonomy was greatly advanced in 1901 by Frederick Vincent Theobald. He described 39 species in a five-volume monograph.
