Anopheles are a group of mosquitoes known as nail or marsh mosquitoes.

They are very important to study because many species carry a parasite called Plasmodium. This tiny parasite causes malaria in humans, birds, and reptiles. One specific type, Anopheles gambiae, is a well-known vector for a deadly form of human malaria. No other group of mosquitoes can spread this specific disease to people. These insects live in many places, from the hot tropics to temperate regions.

The life of an Anopheles mosquito happens in four distinct stages. It begins when a female lays eggs directly on the water. These eggs are tiny and have special floats on their sides.

Next, the eggs hatch into larvae that live underwater. Unlike many other mosquitoes, these larvae do not have a breathing tube. They must lie flat and horizontal against the water surface to breathe. After the larvae grow, they become comma-shaped pupae. Finally, the adult mosquito emerges from the pupa to fly.

Scientists have studied these mosquitoes for a long time. A German scientist named J. W. Meigen first described them in 1818. He named the group Anopheles, which comes from a Greek word meaning "useless." Later, an English scientist named Frederick Vincent Theobald did a lot of work on them. In 1901, he described 39 different species in a large five-volume book. He used specimens sent to the British Museum from all over the world. This helped people understand how many different types of these mosquitoes exist.

There are many interesting facts about how they live and eat. Female mosquitoes need to drink blood to get protein for their eggs.

However, male mosquitoes only eat nectar from flowers. If a male drinks blood, it can actually be toxic and kill him. Adult mosquitoes can be identified by their unique resting position. They sit with their abdomens pointing upward instead of staying flat. In very hot and dry places, they can enter a state called aestivation. This is a type of dormancy that helps them survive long dry seasons.

You can see how these mosquitoes connect to the world around you. They rely on water like ponds, marshes, or even small rain pools to grow. Even though they need water, adults can travel very far on the wind. They have even been known to travel inside human baggage on aircraft. Some animals even use them for food, like the jumping spider. These spiders look for the specific upward posture of the mosquito to find them. This shows how every living thing is part of a much larger web.
