Culex

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Culex is a large group of mosquitoes found all over the world. They live almost everywhere except for the very cold northern parts of temperate zones. You can find them in big cities like Los Angeles. These insects are important because they can carry many diseases. They can pass germs to humans, birds, and other animals. Some of these illnesses are called arboviruses. These include West Nile virus and Japanese encephalitis.

The life of a Culex mosquito follows a special path called metamorphosis. It usually takes about two weeks in warm weather. A female mosquito lays eggs in rafts on the water. One raft can hold as many as 300 eggs. These eggs are small, dark brown, and shaped like cigars. They like to stay in small pools of still water. This could be a puddle, a bucket, or even a tire.

When the eggs hatch, the larvae live under the water. They are long and thin. They stay mostly upright by moving their bristly mouthparts. To swim, they lash their bodies back and forth. They eat tiny bits of plants or microscopic living things. Later, they turn into a pupa. A pupa is shaped like a comma. It does not eat food, but it swims with quick jerks to hide from predators.

Scientists have studied these insects for a long time. A man named Carl Linnaeus first named this group. He used a Latin word that means a midge or a gnat. Today, we know Culex is a very large group. It has over 20 subgenera and more than 1,000 different species. New species are still being found and described quite often.

It is easy to tell a Culex mosquito apart from others. Most Culex mosquitoes have clear wings. Other mosquitoes might have spotted wings. You can also look at their bodies. A female Culex has short palps, which are small parts near the mouth. When they rest, they hold their two wings flat over their abdomen. They are also attracted to a compound called nonanal. This works together with carbon dioxide to find them.
