These animals can obtain nutrition from non-blood sources during at least one stage of their life. Many mosquito species, such as *Aedes aegypti*, are facultative hematophages. Both males and females may feed on pollen or fruit juice for survival. However, females still require a blood meal to produce their eggs.

This feeding habit has evolved independently across many different groups. This is known as convergent evolution. It appears in various arthropod, annelid, nematode, and mammalian taxa. Among insects, the order Diptera includes eleven families with hematophagous habits. This accounts for more than half of the 19 known hematophagous arthropod taxa. There are approximately 14,000 species of hematophagous arthropods. This even includes certain species of moths, such as those in the genus *Calyptra*. Many of these animals are nocturnal to avoid detection. They use specialized detectors to find hosts. These detectors sense heat, movement, light, or chemicals like CO2 and sweat.

Hematophagy is of great medical importance due to disease transmission. The act of phlebotomy creates a channel for contamination. Bacteria, viruses, and parasites can move from the animal to the host. This process spreads many infectious diseases. These include malaria, Zika fever, Lyme disease, and the bubonic plague. Other examples are dengue fever, West Nile fever, and Chagas disease. Many different organisms act as vectors for these illnesses. This enzyme helps them degrade excess tyrosine after a blood meal. If this enzyme is inhibited, tyrosine builds up and kills the animal. This provides a way to control disease-carrying populations. Beyond controlling pests, hematophagy has medical benefits for humans. This practice is called hirudotherapy. Doctors use leeches to prevent blood from clotting on wounds after surgery. This helps prevent infection and aids recovery. Scientists are even using bat saliva to develop drugs for stroke patients.
