Morse code is a way to send messages using signals.

These signals use two different lengths. They are called dots and dashes. People also call them dits and dahs.

Samuel Morse helped create this system. An engineer named Alfred Vail made it even better. Vail wanted the code to be fast. He looked at how often letters appear in English. He gave the most common letters the shortest codes. For example, the letter E is just one dot. This makes sending messages much quicker.

Signals can travel through many things. They can move through electric wires or radio waves. They can even move through light or sound. To send a message, a person turns a signal on and off. A dot is a short signal. A dash is three times longer than a dot.

There are also spaces between the parts. A space follows every dot or dash. A longer space separates letters. An even longer space separates words. This helps people read the message clearly. Today, pilots and sailors still use these skills.
