While people use Standard Arabic for books, Darija is the main spoken tongue.

Darija grew from two different groups of people. One group brought their speech long ago. They lived in cities and near trade routes. These are called pre-Hilalian dialects.

Another group arrived later in the 11th century. These were nomadic tribes called the Banu Hilal. Their speech is known as Hilalian dialects.

Today, many people live in big cities. Because of this, a main way of speaking has grown. It is based on dialects from the Atlantic coast. This helps people from different areas understand each other. It is used a lot on TV and radio. This main way of speaking is very popular in big cities like Casablanca and Rabat.
