These rules help people speak and write clearly. Long ago, scholars studied the Quran to find these rules. Two famous groups of thinkers helped shape them. The Basra school focused on formal grammar. The Kufa school loved Arabic poetry and culture.

Scholars divide the study of Arabic into four parts. One part is the lexicon. This is the study of words. Another part is morphology. This looks at how words are made. The third part is syntax. This studies how words fit together. The last part is rhetoric. This is the art of beautiful speech.

Arabic has many sounds. It has 28 consonant sounds. It also has six vowel sounds. Some vowels are short. Others are long. In writing, short vowels are often left out. People use small marks called diacritics to show them. There are also many ways to use pronouns. These are words like "me" or "you." In Arabic, these words can change their shape. They change based on gender and number.
