Maltese is a very special language.

It is spoken by the people of Malta. It is the only Semitic language written with Latin letters. This means it uses the same alphabet we use in English.

Maltese has a long and mixed history. It grew from an old dialect of Arabic. This dialect came to Malta a long time ago. Later, the language changed as it met other cultures. It took many words from Sicilian and Italian. Today, about half of its words come from those languages. English words also make up a part of it.

Because of these changes, Maltese is quite unique. It does not sound like modern Arabic. In fact, Maltese speakers may not understand much Arabic. The language has its own way of working. A famous old text is called Il-Kantilena.
