Modern Standard Arabic

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Modern Standard Arabic is a special way of writing.

It is used by many people in the Arab world. It is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Most books, newspapers, and magazines are written in this way. It is the only form of Arabic taught in schools. People use it to write laws and important papers. It is not usually the first language people speak at home. Instead, people speak local dialects with their families. These spoken versions are called colloquial Arabic.

Modern Standard Arabic is a newer version of Classical Arabic. Classical Arabic was used in the Quran many years ago. Scholars added dots to letters to help with reading. They also added marks to show how to say words. Modern Standard Arabic uses new words for things like cars or the Internet. This helps people talk about life today. Some people call both versions Fuṣḥā. This name means "the most eloquent Arabic." It shows how much people value this beautiful language.
