Moorhen

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Moorhens are medium-sized birds that live near water. Their name comes from the Latin word Gallinula. This word means "little hen." These birds belong to the rail family called Rallidae. They are often found in shallow lakes with many plants.

You might see them in flocks of birds. However, they can be very bossy during breeding season. They will fight to keep their own space.

These birds have a very special way of moving. Their legs are yellowish-green or yellowish-orange. They have long toes that are not webbed. These long toes help them walk on soft or uneven ground. Even without webs, they are still good swimmers.

Most moorhens have short, rounded wings. This makes them weak fliers. The Gough moorhen is almost flightless and can only flutter a few metres. Some moorhens fly long distances at night. They move from cold areas like Siberia to warmer places.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. A French zoologist named Mathurin Jacques Brisson named the genus in 1760. He used the common moorhen as the main example.

The common moorhen was named by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. Fossils show that these birds have been around since the Late Oligocene. The genus likely started in the Southern Hemisphere near Australia. By the Pliocene era, they lived all over the world. They have been found in places like Hungary and Germany. They were even found in Kansas in the USA.

There are many different types of moorhens today. The genus Gallinula has five species living now. One species, the Tristan moorhen, went extinct in the late 19th century. The Makira woodhen is also very rare.

Some birds were moved to different groups. The native hens of Australia are in the genus Tribonyx. They have shorter, thicker bills and different tails. The Dusky moorhen lives in Australia and New Guinea. The Common gallinule lives in the Americas and Hawaii.

Learning about moorhens helps us see how animals change. Some birds on islands lose the ability to fly. This is a common trend for many rails.

Moorhens are also omnivores, which means they eat many things. They eat plants and small rodents. They also eat amphibians and eggs. This helps them live in different watery places. They are a great example of how birds adapt to their homes. You can see how their feet and wings match their lives.
