Coot

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Coots are medium-sized birds that live on the water. They belong to a bird family called Rallidae. Most coots have black feathers, which makes them easy to spot. They often swim together in large groups in open water. A group of these birds is called a covert or a cover.

These birds have a special way of moving through their world. They have long toes with wide lobes of skin. These skin lobes help them kick and push through the water. When the coot lifts its foot, the skin folds back. This allows them to walk on dry land or thick mud.

Scientists have studied these birds for a very long time. The Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus named the coot genus in 1758. He wrote about them in his book called Systema Naturae. Before him, a Swiss naturalist named Conrad Gessner used the name in 1555. The name comes from the Latin word for a Eurasian coot.

Coots eat many different things, which means they are omnivorous. They eat plants, fish, eggs, and small animals. Raising a family can be a very hard job for them. If there is not enough food, parents may attack their own chicks. This behavior is sometimes called "tousling" the young.

Because of this, they might only raise a few chicks. They may only raise two or three out of nine hatchlings.
