earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Modernity is a very big idea in history. It describes a specific era of time. It also describes new ways of thinking and living. These changes grew after the Renaissance period. They grew even more during the Age of Reason. This was a time of new thought in the 17th century. The 18th-century Enlightenment helped these ideas spread.

Modernity changed how humans see the whole world. It shaped our culture, our politics, and our daily lives.

How does modernity work in our lives? It works through many different changes happening at once. People began moving into large cities, which is called urbanization. New ways of handling money and trade grew, known as capitalism. Many people started to believe in progress. They thought new technology would make the world better. This belief is often called progressivism.

These shifts changed how people related to one another every day.

History shows us that modernity has many different stages. Early modernity began around the year 1500. This was a time when life began to feel different. Classical modernity lasted from 1789 to 1900. During this stage, mass media like newspapers became common. People also started using the telegraph and the telephone. These tools helped news travel much faster than before.

Late modernity began around 1900 and spread across the globe.

Many thinkers have studied these historical shifts. In the 1600s, people debated the "Ancients" and the "Moderns." The Moderns believed new ideas could beat old ones. Charles Baudelaire wrote about modern art in 1863. He said art should capture the fast life of a city. Some people think modernity ended around 1930. Others say it lasted until the 1990s.

The time after modernity is called postmodernity.

Modernity links to many things you see today. Most modern democracies use ideas from this era. For example, Montesquieu proposed separating powers in government. This helps keep a country fair and balanced. Many of our political rules come from this time. Modernity also changed how we view religion and tradition. Some people even started movements to protect old ways.
