A mitzvah is a special word used in Jewish life. It has two main meanings that work together. First, it refers to a commandment from God. These are religious duties that people follow. Second, the word describes a deed or an act of kindness. When someone does something kind for another person, it is often called a mitzvah. This connects following religious laws with showing heartfelt love for neighbors.

There are many different ways to group these commandments. Some are positive duties that tell people what they should do. Others are negative rules that tell people what they should not do. Tradition says there are 613 commandments in total. This count includes 248 positive ones and 365 negative ones. Some rules are very simple and self-evident, like not stealing. Other rules are called decrees because their specific purpose is not known. These are seen as ways to show respect for God's will.

History shows us how these ideas grew over many centuries. The tradition of the 613 commandments was first recorded in the 3rd century CE. A man named Rabbi Simlai shared this idea in a sermon. He may have wanted to show that people should follow the Torah every day. Later, famous scholars like Maimonides wrote books to list these commandments. Maimonides wrote a famous work called Sefer Hamitzvot. Different thinkers have also debated how many rules there truly are.

Jewish law also includes rules made by rabbis, not just from the Torah. These are called rabbinic laws, or mitzvot derabbanan. Some people follow these because they believe it is a duty to obey religious leaders. There are seven special rabbinic mitzvot that are very well known. These include lighting Shabbat candles and lighting Hanukkah lights. People also recite blessings before they enjoy things. When these seven are added to the 613, the total is 620. This number is special because it matches the value of the phrase Keter Torah.

Today, mitzvot remain a central part of how many people live. In the late 1960s, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson started the Ten Mitzvah Campaigns. These programs encouraged people to connect with specific duties. This included things like giving charity or studying the Torah. These efforts helped people see each mitzvah as a direct link to God. Even when people disagree on certain details, the practice remains strong. It is a way for people to express their identity and their faith.
