He was famous for his skill and his incredible strength in the ring. People often call him one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. He spent many years working for a company called All Japan Pro Wrestling, or AJPW. He later led a large group of wrestlers to start a new company called Pro Wrestling Noah. Misawa was a leader who cared deeply about his sport and his fellow athletes. His hard work helped make professional wrestling popular in many different countries.

Misawa used a very specific way of wrestling called ōdō, which means "King's Road." This style was known for being very intense and physically demanding. It involved many big, powerful moves that required great skill to perform. During his early years, he even wrestled as a character called Tiger Mask. This character wore a mask and used high-flying moves to impress the crowd. Later, he took off the mask to show his true self. This change helped him become the top star, or "ace," of his company.

His journey began long before he became a famous star. He was born in Yūbari, Hokkaidō, but his family moved to Koshigaya, Saitama. Misawa was a very talented athlete even as a young student. He won a national high school championship in amateur wrestling in 1980. He also placed fifth in the junior age group at the World Championships that same year. He joined the professional training camp for AJPW in March 1981. He worked hard to learn from many different teachers and experts.

Misawa achieved many amazing things throughout his long career. He was a world champion eight different times. He won the Triple Crown Heavyweight Championship five times. He was also the very first person to hold the GHC Heavyweight Championship.

He was a champion in tag team matches eight times as well. His matches were so popular that he sold out many shows at the Nippon Budokan. In fact, fifty-three of his sixty-nine main events there were complete sellouts.

Even as he got older, Misawa stayed dedicated to the sport. He worked a full-time schedule to help his company survive. He spent his time mentoring young talents like Naomichi Marufuji and Go Shiozaki. He wanted them to be the next leaders of the ring. Sadly, the many injuries he gathered over his long career eventually took a toll on his body. He passed away in 2009 during a match in Hiroshima. His legacy lives on through the students he trained and the exciting style he helped create.
