Misandry is a word used to describe the hatred of or prejudice against men and boys. The term comes from two Greek words. One part means "man" and the other part means "hatred." A person who holds these feelings is called a misandrist. While the word sounds very specific, people use it in many different ways today. Some use it to describe personal feelings. Others use it to talk about how society works. It is a word that often appears in debates about gender and fairness.

History shows that the word has changed its meaning over time. It first appeared in the late 19th century. At that time, people used it as a label for early feminists. They wanted to claim that feminism was the same as misogyny, which is the hatred of women. In the 1890s, some newspapers even called women "man haters." Later, in the 1980s, the word became popular again in books about men's rights. It moved from old newspapers to new places like the internet and blogs.

Today, many people discuss misandry in online spaces called the "manosphere." This includes websites like Reddit and 4chan. Men's rights activists (MRAs) use the term to talk about what they see as unfair treatment. They point to specific areas like divorce laws and the military draft. Some groups also mention how courts handle domestic violence or the treatment of male rape victims. They believe these are examples of institutional misandry, where laws seem to favor women over men.

However, many experts and researchers disagree with these views. They argue that misandry is not the same as misogyny. One scholar, Marc A. Ouellette, says misandry lacks the deep, systemic power that misogyny has in history. He believes that comparing the two simplifies how power works between genders. A 2023 study even looked at whether feminists are more likely to hate men. That research found that feminists are no more likely to be misandrist than any other group. Some researchers even call the idea of widespread misandry a "myth."

Race also plays a very important role in how people experience this topic. Some researchers, like Tommy J. Curry, study how Black men and boys face a specific kind of hate. This is sometimes called anti-Black misandry. Other researchers look at how these feelings affect transmasculine people as well. Because these ideas involve race, gender, and law, they remain very complex. People continue to study these patterns to understand how to make society fairer for everyone.
