In Judaism, a minyan is a specific group of people. The word comes from a Hebrew root that means to count or to number.

This group is needed for many religious duties. A minyan is most often used for public prayer. Because of this, the word can also mean a prayer service itself. Having a group is a very important part of Jewish life. Many believe the Divine Presence stays where ten people gather for study or worship.

How a minyan works depends on the specific task. Most of the time, the group must have ten Jewish adults. In traditional orthodox movements, these must be men aged 13 or older.

However, the number is not always ten. For example, a Passover sacrifice once required 30 people. Some ancient rules say seven or even six men could lead certain prayers. It is also noted that nine rabbis cannot make a minyan, but ten cobblers can.

There are many old stories about where this number comes from. One idea links it to Abraham's prayer in the book of Genesis. Another root is found in how Moses helped lead ancient Israel. Moses used leaders of tens, fifties, and hundreds to help manage people.

The Talmud also uses special word links to explain the number. It connects verses about being holy in the "midst" of a congregation to the story of ten spies. These connections help explain why ten is the magic number.

Many different rituals require this group to be present. People need a minyan to read from the Torah or the Prophets. It is also used for the priestly blessing.

A minyan is needed for seven blessings at a wedding. It is also used for special blessings after meals or for funeral ceremonies. Some of these ceremonies are no longer used today. Other tasks include reciting the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy or Birkat ha-Gomel.

There are many discussions about who can be counted in a group. Most people agree that boys under 13 are not part of a minyan. However, some old texts debate if a smart six-year-old can help.

There is also much discussion about women and the minyan. While some believe women can be part of certain counts, traditional rules often focus on men for public prayer. These different views show how much people care about these sacred rules. People often choose to travel to be with a group rather than praying alone.
