Miniseries

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A miniseries is a special way to tell a story on television. It is a program with a set number of episodes. This is different from an ongoing series. Ongoing shows can last for many years. A miniseries has a clear beginning, middle, and end. This structure is like a novel or a play. Because the story must end, the characters can truly change. They can grow up, mature, or even die as the episodes go by.

There are different ways to name these shows. In the United Kingdom, people often call them serials. In North America, they are often called series. Some experts have tried to give very exact definitions. Leslie Halliwell and Philip Purser suggested they often have four to six episodes. Stuart Cunningham said they have more than two episodes. However, they have fewer than a 13-part season. In the 1980s, some shows were even called television films. These were sometimes shown over just two or three nights.

These stories have a long history. In Britain, serials began with radio plays. The BBC started reading books on the radio in the 1920s. In 1925, they broadcast A Christmas Carol. Later, the BBC made the first serial written just for TV. This was called The Quatermass Experiment in 1953. It had six parts. Its success led to more shows like Quatermass II in 1955. In 1967, a big hit called The Forsyte Saga had 26 episodes. This show was sold all over the world.

In North America, the term "miniseries" first appeared in 1963. It was used to describe a music show called Your Hit Parade. One of the first true American miniseries was The Blue Knight in 1973. It was a four-hour movie shown in four parts. In 1977, a show called Roots became a massive success. It had 12 hours of story spread over eight nights. About 130 million people watched it. This was the highest-rated TV program ever at that time.

Many different countries make these types of shows. In Japan, "home dramas" focus on family life. These became very popular starting in the 1950s. South Korea also makes famous shows called K-dramas. These are popular worldwide thanks to streaming services. In the Soviet Union, they called them multiple-episode films. They made many of these specifically for children. Examples include The Adventures of Buratino in 1976. Today, the lines between miniseries and limited series are often blurred.
