Most of these tombs sit in a cluster near the city of Beijing. This group is often called the Thirteen Tombs of the Ming dynasty. They are found in the Changping District, north-northwest of the city center. The site sits on the southern slope of the Tianshou Mountain. These tombs are very important parts of China's long history.

Choosing the right spot for these tombs was a very careful job. The third Ming ruler, the Yongle Emperor, picked this location. He used special rules called Feng Shui to find the best place.

He wanted a quiet, pristine valley with dark earth and calm water. The mountains help protect the area from bad spirits and evil winds. This valley creates a peaceful place for the emperors to rest. The design follows the natural shape of the land.

Visitors enter the tomb area through a long path called the Spirit Way.

This path starts with a huge stone memorial archway built in 1540. This archway is one of the largest stone arches in China today. Along the road, you can see 18 pairs of large stone statues. These statues look like mythical animals and are larger than life size.

There is also a pavilion with a 50-ton stone statue of a Bixi. The road leads past many beautiful carvings and tall pillars.

History at the tombs has seen many big changes over the years. The first Ming ruler, the Hongwu Emperor, was buried near Nanjing instead. Most other emperors were buried in this same valley near Beijing. In 1644, an army led by Li Zicheng arrived and burned many tombs.

The last Ming ruler, the Chongzhen Emperor, died in 1644 as well. He was buried in a smaller tomb called Siling. Later, the Qing government gave a title to a Ming descendant. This person's job was to perform rituals at the tombs for many generations.

Today, these ancient sites are part of a World Heritage Site.
