Most of these tombs are in a group near Beijing. This group is known as the Thirteen Tombs.

The third Ming ruler, the Yongle Emperor, chose this spot. He used a way of thinking called Feng Shui.

He wanted a quiet valley with mountains and water. A long road called the Spirit Way leads into the area.

This path has a big stone archway. It also has 18 pairs of stone statues. These statues look like mythical animals and are very large.

History was not always easy for these sites. In 1644, an army came and burned many tombs. The last Ming ruler, the Chongzhen Emperor, died that year. He was buried in a smaller tomb. Later, a new ruling family helped a Ming descendant. This person's job was to perform rituals at the tombs. Today, these tombs are a World Heritage Site. You can visit three of them: Changling, Dingling, and Zhaoling.
