Most millstones work in pairs. The bottom stone is called a bedstone. It stays still. The top stone is called a runner stone. It spins around. This spinning makes a scissoring action. It crushes grain trapped between the stones. This turns the grain into fine flour.

People have used these stones for a very long time. Some stones in Australia are 60,000 years old. People used them to grind seeds for bread. They also ground nuts and berries. Some stones were used for art or medicine.

In some places, people use small stones by hand. In India, many women use hand mills every day.

Other mills are much larger. They use water or wind for power. A metal piece called a millrind holds the top stone. This helps it spin on a shaft. In the past, animals also helped turn big stones.
