People have used them since ancient times. Most grindstones are made from sandstone. They work through friction. Friction is the rubbing of two things together. This rubbing wears away small bits of metal. It makes a fine, sharp edge.

Some stones work like sandpaper. Each stone has a different grit. Grit is how rough the stone feels. Different grit makes tools sharper or duller.

In Australia, Aboriginal peoples made grinding grooves. They rubbed stone axes against sandstone rocks. This made shallow, oval shapes in the stone. These grooves can be long and deep. People often worked near water. They sprinkled water on the stone to stop dust.

Some grindstones are machines. They spin a round stone around a center point. Many machines use pedals. Pedals help a person speed up or slow down. This helps them control the sharpening.
