It is known as a gunship and a troop transport. This means it can carry weapons and eight passengers at once. Most helicopters can only do one of these jobs. The Mi-24 can do both at the same time. Because it is so tough, pilots called it a "flying tank."

Other people called it "Crocodile" because of its camouflage colors.

This helicopter works using several clever parts. It has two large engines on top. These engines turn a big five-blade rotor.

A smaller rotor on the tail helps the pilot steer. The helicopter also has small wings on the sides. These wings help the machine lift up while flying fast. They also hold missiles and rockets for the crew to use.

To stay safe, the cockpit uses a strong titanium tub. This metal protects the pilot from harm.

A designer named Mikhail Mil started this project in the 1960s.

He wanted a machine that could move soldiers and provide fire support. He showed a model of his idea in 1966. Some leaders did not want to build it at first. They thought other weapons were more important. However, Marshal Andrey A. Grechko helped the project move forward. The first prototype began flying tests in September 1969. The official Mi-24A entered production in 1970.

Many facts tell us how big and strong this machine is. The twin-engine design weighs about 10.5 tons.

If you added weapons to them, you had to remove the seats. The Mi-24 was built to keep the seats and add the weapons. This makes it much more useful for soldiers on the ground. It is like a truck that can also carry a heavy shield. This design helped it become one of the most famous helicopters in the world.
