Many people call him the fountainhead of Russian music. This means he was the starting point for a new style. Before him, much music in Russia came from Europe. Glinka wanted to create music that sounded truly Russian. He used the sounds of his own home to do this. His work helped many other musicians find their own way.

As a child, he spent much time indoors. He heard the ringing of church bells. He also heard peasant choirs singing folk songs. These singers used a special style called podgolosochnaya. This means they sang improvised harmonies below the main melody. These unique sounds helped Glinka move away from Western music styles. Later, he studied the piano and the violin. He even learned many different languages at school.

As he grew up, Glinka traveled to many places.

He wanted to write music for the Russian people. He studied in Berlin under a teacher named Siegfried Dehn. This helped him finish important works like his piano pieces.

Glinka is most famous for his two great operas.
