He is famous for bringing a style called Romanticism to Russia. This style focused on deep feelings and wonder. Zhukovsky was a master of translation. He took poems from many different languages and turned them into Russian. He translated works by ancient writers like Homer and Ferdowsi. He also translated famous poets like Goethe and Schiller. Many people believe his Russian versions are even more beautiful than the originals.

His work helped change how the Russian language was used in art.

Zhukovsky worked in many different ways to share his talent. He often used translation as a way to practice new language skills. For example, he translated German poems to help teach a Grand Duchess. He also wrote his own original poems about love and country. One of his most famous original works was a patriotic poem for soldiers. He even wrote the lyrics for the national anthem of Imperial Russia. Later in life, he focused on translating very long stories from the East. He spent a lot of time working on the rhythm of his words. He wanted the Russian language to sound natural and musical.

His life began in a small village called Mishenskoe. He was born to a landowner named Afanasi Bunin and a woman named Salkha. Because of his family situation, he was formally adopted by a friend. This meant he used a different last name for his whole life. When he was fourteen, he went to Moscow to study at a special school. There, he met important writers like Nikolay Karamzin. In 1802, he published a famous translation that made him well known. This success led to him becoming an editor for a major literary journal. He used this job to explore new themes in Russian writing.

Zhukovsky lived through many big historical events. During the war in 1812, he volunteered to help defend Moscow. He worked with a general to help keep the spirits of the troops high. After the war, he had a very creative time in a place called Dolbino. This caught the attention of the royal family in Saint Petersburg. He became a tutor for Grand Duchess Alexandra Feodorovna. Later, he taught the future tsar, Alexander II. His teaching methods were so good they helped change how the young tsar learned. He also used his high position to help many other writers.

Zhukovsky was a great friend and mentor to many people. He was a leader in a group called the Arzamas literary society. He helped a young poet named Alexander Pushkin grow into a star. Even when Pushkin became more famous, they stayed lifelong friends. Zhukovsky also helped protect the work of other writers like Nikolay Gogol. He even helped rescue the poems of Pushkin after he died. He traveled a lot in Europe and met many famous artists. He died in a place called Baden-Baden in 1852. His body was brought back to Saint Petersburg to be buried.
