Many writers use different languages to share their ideas. For example, the novelist Chinghiz Aitmatov wrote in Kyrgyz. Some writers, like Vasil Bykaŭ, wrote in Belarusian but translated their work into Russian. This variety shows how many different voices make up the tradition. People in Russia have a very deep respect for books. Some even say it is the most reading nation in the world.

Long ago, stories were shared through spoken words rather than books. Professional storytellers called bards would play an instrument called a gusli. They told heroic tales, legends, and fairy tales to listeners.

As time passed, people began to write things down in new ways. They used the native Russian language for laws, letters, and military tales. In the 11th and 15th centuries, people even wrote letters on birch bark.

These birch bark manuscripts are very special pieces of history. Writing helped people keep track of their lives and their rules.

Writing grew much more formal during the Middle Ages. One of the oldest books found is the Novgorod Psalter.

It was written around the year 1000 on wooden tablet pages. Another early book is the Ostromir Gospels from 1056. Much of the writing during this time was about religion. Writers also kept chronicles, which are records of historical events. These early books helped shape how people understood their own history.

In the 1800s, Russian literature entered a famous "Golden Age."

This was a time of incredible talent in poetry and novels. Famous names like Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky became known worldwide. Later, the "Silver Age" brought a new wave of great poets. Writers like Anna Akhmatova and Alexander Blok were part of this era. This period showed the world the great skill of Russian authors.

In the 20th century, history caused many changes for writers. After the Russian Revolution in 1917, literature split into different paths. Some writers stayed in the Soviet Union, while others lived in exile.

Some authors, like Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, wrote about very difficult life experiences. Even during hard times, the love for books stayed strong. Today, Russia is a very large producer of books. In 2011, it was the fourth largest book producer in the world.
